July 2003: Steeven's Lane

At the bottom of the incline is Heuston station where city-bound trams will cross John's Road and swing right along the quays. I will be watching with interest on a wet day to see trams ascending this grade! This road, leading to St Patrick's Mental Hospital, had to be kept open at all times during Luas's construction. It is now banned to all traffic except that accessing the hospital.

[Addendum 2005: Impressively, most Luas trams have ascended Steeven's Lane without difficulty. In November 2005 there was a report of a tram having to take several attempts before it succeeded. The Citadis units have sanding equipment but rarely use it.].
